<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I've been working to help some good friends of mine reorganize and redecorate their condo in Newton, MA. They've been living there for quite a few years and while there is plenty of room in the condo, they have begun to feel like the space is closing in on them. To help them reclaim their home and sanity I'm helping them rethink the way each room is used and select furniture that better fits each space. We're also adding lots of new organizational solutions and a clean, refreshing, gender-neutral color palette.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
One of the first rooms we've tackled is the main guest room. This room functions on a day-to-day basis as the husband's dressing room, serving as a guest room on occasion. Since it's a secondary space we're keeping things budget-conscious and sourcing lots of Ikea and Target items (see key furnishings and accessories above). Ikea is a great source if you remember to keep things neutral. Focus on texture rather than color and keep the lines of the furniture simple. You can get really great basics at Ikea, like neutral linen window panels and wool or natural fiber rugs, at prices that you truly just cannot find anywhere else. Just <b><i>make sure</i></b> you use the shopping list/check stock features on their website before you go into the store, and get an ice cream cone on the way out to make it bearable!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are some before shots of the room. They are weird panoramas but you get the idea. Stay tuned for final project photos!</div>

A while back I started a (sporadic) little <a href="http://aliveandkickingdesign.blogspot.com/search/label/apartment%20challenge">series</a>, posting about projects I was taking on in my own apartment to spruce it up a bit. Well, as these things happen, we ended up moving out before I completed all of the projects I'd had in mind - though really, a home should be a reflection of your life, and as such it is always a work in progress! Here I'm sharing the final photos of our place as it was just before we moved. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can probably see that I did replace the sofa legs (read part one of that project <a href="http://aliveandkickingdesign.blogspot.com/2013/01/apartment-challenge-replacing-sofa-legs.html">here</a>), a minor detail that to me makes a huge difference. There were lots of little things that I never got around to, like rehanging curtains or doing anything to jazz up the dining area, and I did diddly in the bedroom/office. But we'll always remember that place fondly. We were happy and comfortable there for 2.5 super transformative years. In moving, one of the most amazing things was seeing just how much we had fit into a rather small one-bedroom apartment. By living an edited life and making sure that every inch of closet and storage space was organized and used in the most efficient way possible, we were able to keep visible areas and surfaces pretty clutter-free and comfortable. Once spread out, all of our "stuff" managed to fill our new, much larger place with no problem. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Stay tuned for future photos of our new place!</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Late last year I was contacted by a couple looking for custom wedding invitations and paper suite to complement their modern Muslim wedding. Faizah & Zaahir (watch their adorable NY Times vows video <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/02/fashion/weddings/faizah-malik-zaahir-syed-weddings.html?_r=0">here</a>) came to me with a super clear vision of what they wanted: a suite of coordinating pieces including invites, guest info cards, escort cards, menus, programs, guest totes and even background graphics for their wedding website and photobooth. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While Faizah initially found me through <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/aliveandkickingnyc?ref=si_shop">my Etsy shop</a>, they both lived in Brooklyn so we were lucky enough to meet in person to talk about what they wanted and flip through the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Islamic-Geometric-Patterns-Eric-Broug/dp/050028721X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371580821&sr=8-1&keywords=islamic+geometric+patterns">Islamic Geometric Patterns by Erig Broug</a>, selecting various patterns to use throughout their paper suite. Over the course of the next few months I worked to churn out the various components. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First came the background graphic for their wedding website...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In the end I was super pleased with the results. It was tons of work, but I always get so much fulfillment out of hand-preparing the screens and printing and cutting each piece. There's nothing like the satisfaction of seeing the stacks of completed paper goods that you made yourself, and it's an honor to be able to provide a couple with an important component to one of the most important days of their lives. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's nuts that it is mid-June and I am just getting around to posting about these wall patterns I painted for a client back in early April. Of course I could never have done this myself - I had the help of two seriously amazing friends who for some reason like me enough to spend three days stenciling, taping, painting, peeling and touching up hexagonal wall patterns with me.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3OtClGHlt8Ujn7TNVUJXm0gWaXyCFb1INai6HKTax3qKsy3qwMLMUxYtqoq3wu-F4lb1nBNQcL0LH3bPnzbFLaS-0T_pNrcUg7P0e2z4JCH2_0RJVwSjYNzHbFDIv_d_jzwyG5Kas9Sw/s1600/Will+&+Rita.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3OtClGHlt8Ujn7TNVUJXm0gWaXyCFb1INai6HKTax3qKsy3qwMLMUxYtqoq3wu-F4lb1nBNQcL0LH3bPnzbFLaS-0T_pNrcUg7P0e2z4JCH2_0RJVwSjYNzHbFDIv_d_jzwyG5Kas9Sw/s640/Will+&+Rita.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hugest thanks to Will and Ri</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, this was a LOT of work. Firstly I designed the patterns in line with a hexagon motif that repeats throughout the clients' home. Then I had to think a lot about how to get those designs off paper and onto the wall. I considered ordering custom stencils, making my own large-scale adhesive stencils, snapping chalk guide lines onto the wall and drawing the pattern using those, and finally settled on making a small stencil of a repeating unit that we could move and trace along the wall.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First we traced, then we taped...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEP9iNuxGlXLjGHodF3xZQPeVEhCDx5tdxE2w8VGtVCPFFZmJwkm0BgGPZ484gzCpbXmeayZOSVFPAlA-_0-Ts6AW6qYAXgiIzi-SekbjiZygH8noKwUjxENpa-13_MQnrEX-5qdRNBPo/s1600/01_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Hex+Trellis+Pattern+Painting_Trace&Tape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEP9iNuxGlXLjGHodF3xZQPeVEhCDx5tdxE2w8VGtVCPFFZmJwkm0BgGPZ484gzCpbXmeayZOSVFPAlA-_0-Ts6AW6qYAXgiIzi-SekbjiZygH8noKwUjxENpa-13_MQnrEX-5qdRNBPo/s1600/01_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Hex+Trellis+Pattern+Painting_Trace&Tape.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Then we painted...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHcuovFw7bILJdi6GgTDfJphXQd5zHu8iNIReU-P1KFUYwMkdx9R_-ildAz66btPjwufPaLf4UXPqcrfLVVmpbpltCCYsk0wk3MaoXL1ulkL-XoibRaxS9LnRTHKA_vqxfp2JVQj3aoC8/s1600/02_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Hex+Trellis+Pattern+Painting_Paint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHcuovFw7bILJdi6GgTDfJphXQd5zHu8iNIReU-P1KFUYwMkdx9R_-ildAz66btPjwufPaLf4UXPqcrfLVVmpbpltCCYsk0wk3MaoXL1ulkL-XoibRaxS9LnRTHKA_vqxfp2JVQj3aoC8/s1600/02_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Hex+Trellis+Pattern+Painting_Paint.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And we stencilled while we taped and we taped while we painted. All the while we talked about the meaning of life and how Fergie really likes to spell things in her songs. And Will kept saying "le doy" and Ri was worried he'd start saying it all the time, for real. Then the paint was dry and we peeled off the tape.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next day we worked to touch up what we lovingly termed "the poop stains." And the messy edges - why doesn't painter's tape ever work the way it should??</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzXswz3tNOWjbZtOXm4OMOxPImq0jAO_wN7Hfn-87tRDZ6J5Uy8GhaWLrrH6rsEgG15m2Pf_zOWwPjYvwRWdNHMEMuodak8tHqEwYIOpoiN3RV73c1LqlxluCXGCnuATBScAVbT9oP4cE/s1600/03_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Hex+Trellis+Pattern+Painting_Touchups.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzXswz3tNOWjbZtOXm4OMOxPImq0jAO_wN7Hfn-87tRDZ6J5Uy8GhaWLrrH6rsEgG15m2Pf_zOWwPjYvwRWdNHMEMuodak8tHqEwYIOpoiN3RV73c1LqlxluCXGCnuATBScAVbT9oP4cE/s1600/03_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Hex+Trellis+Pattern+Painting_Touchups.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
On the second day we also got down to it with the pattern for a wall in the foyer. Same process...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We stencilled and we taped...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnFbmCzmt8gT7BYennhsWvEnwG60g_-znY7gUjZ2X3lqt_9hGxfyiRfw8oga52bFIPDNWKWF1srFUSeCSOWsP1K8YbDBSXbUWq7jn8olMfUuzOrxuZ2AcjJq4B6hWzIY5QfTxWnounOPA/s1600/01_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Gold+Hex+Pattern+Painting_Taping.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnFbmCzmt8gT7BYennhsWvEnwG60g_-znY7gUjZ2X3lqt_9hGxfyiRfw8oga52bFIPDNWKWF1srFUSeCSOWsP1K8YbDBSXbUWq7jn8olMfUuzOrxuZ2AcjJq4B6hWzIY5QfTxWnounOPA/s1600/01_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Gold+Hex+Pattern+Painting_Taping.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then we covered everything up and Will donned a pair of disposable slippers and face mask and created a dusty, golden storm in the foyer. When the paint was dry we peeled off the tape...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5s78-JUHzUhYwlhIxwZoGgzA5Qgdk9jSQe12KHuwBm5NIF13w8cXT9DsvTJoATEHsJc8FJuXNP6FNulcgDrVttgjRbQuEY9KVqW0QMU4-BSigS-JVwBg1X5Vgla57peR4wgSFZnK2xOo/s1600/02_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Gold+Hex+Pattern+Painting_Paint+and+Peel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5s78-JUHzUhYwlhIxwZoGgzA5Qgdk9jSQe12KHuwBm5NIF13w8cXT9DsvTJoATEHsJc8FJuXNP6FNulcgDrVttgjRbQuEY9KVqW0QMU4-BSigS-JVwBg1X5Vgla57peR4wgSFZnK2xOo/s1600/02_Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Gold+Hex+Pattern+Painting_Paint+and+Peel.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course some touch ups were needed, which we did on the third day, but after that - voilà - the super dramatic entrance that the home owners were after.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for a future post showing progress shots of the entire project!<br />

Well, I have not blogged in a really long time. It has been an insanely busy few months and I'm excited to have a minute to get back on the blog and share some of what's been keeping me occupied. I've been working in collaboration with <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SarahColemanInteriorDesign">Sarah Coleman Interior Design</a> on the interiors of a brownstone in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This space has absolutely beautiful architectural detail, and we've begun to source furnishings and decorative accessories to make the space feel more finished and welcoming for the family who lives there. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Here I'm sharing some progress photos of the first phase of the project: the parlour. These spaces are meant to be where the adults of the house can unwind and entertain. We've divided this long space into a drinks area and a tv/lounge area. Still awaiting some upholstery pieces to flesh out the seating areas, plus the all-important window treatments, but I think we're really on our way to a gorgeous finished space!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Just look at the difference! How amazing is the <a href="http://www.olystudio.com/george-cocktail-table.html">George cocktail table</a> from <a href="http://www.olystudio.com/">Oly Studio</a>? Sarah and I both had our eye on that piece and were excited to have the chance to use it in this project. It's such a great counterpoint to the traditional styling of the sofa. The table on the right-hand side of the far end of the room will eventually be moved downstairs to serve as a bistro table, and this beautiful, mammoth cabinet that the homeowners already had will move to that spot and serve as a bar cabinet:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally! I am posting some pics of the re-hung artwork. I actually hung it long ago, but have been very busy and slacking on the blog. In my <a href="http://aliveandkickingdesign.blogspot.com/2013/02/apartment-challenge-artwork-hanging.html">first post</a> about this project I showed a few images of some great looking artwork walls to serve as inspiration. Since I was working with the artwork we already have, I knew I needed a way to make the pieces relate to each other. I realized that I already had lots of black frames, and so decided that swapping out the few non-black frames for black would be a simple way to create continuity. Overall, it's a big improvement!<br />
<br />
One tool I bought to make things easier was the <a href="http://www.utrdecorating.com/about_hang_and_level.php">Hang & Level</a> by Under the Roof Decorating. It's a bargain at under $15 (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Under-Roof-Decorating-5-100117-Picture/dp/B003Z9JN3I">available here on Amazon</a>) and makes marking the wall where the hanging hardware needs to go a total snap. And if you've just been using nails to hang your artwork, stop it right now! You can get a picture hanging kit at a local hardware store (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Hillman-Fastener-130251-Picture-Assortment/dp/B0032YDF12/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1365872465&sr=1-1&keywords=picture+hanging+kit">or on good old Amazon</a>) and stop tearing up your walls and know that your artwork is more safely fastened to the wall.</div>

Love these bookshelves from the home of designer Lela Rose, featured in <a href="http://www.instyle.com/instyle/">InStyle</a> March 2013. It was smart to build them into that niche to make them flush with the wall at right.</div>

Found this chair for $30 at Junk in Brooklyn. They really do have a lot of junk in there, but I thought this was a good find. In the before pics, below, you'll see that the seat was covered in some safety orange vinyl, which was really dirty and gross. I replaced it with a pretty linen and voila! Now I have a nice new chair.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You might remember this sad photo that showing the pathetic state of the "artwork gallery" behind our sofa. There used to be a fourth piece hanging there, but I knocked into it and broke the glass so it had been down for the count for a few months. But even while that was up, there were some issues: the artwork was hung too high, and the layout of the four pieces just wasn't working. Needs more filling out. Plus Annie Oakley is in a rather crooked frame that my husband and I made ourselves in the early days of our relationship. I will keep the frame for memory's sake, but I think I will re-frame Annie for now. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, finally, I am finding my motivation and will fix this wall! To get inspired I've gathered some photos of successful gallery walls to share...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Wowzers. This one is like an explosion - a puzzle of artwork. And how beautiful is that crown molding? It is like the mother of all crown moldings. Where do people find these apartments? Anyway - drawings, paintings, prints, three dimensional works, photography are all on this wall. The frames are all different but it all works because there is just SO much of it. And it might seem haphazard at first, but if you pay attention you can see there was thought put into the way certain pieces would line up with each other. I definitely don't have this many pieces to put up, but I am inspired by the way they fit their artwork together. Image via <a href="http://littlebluedeer.com/">littlebluedeer.com</a>.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
First off, I would kill for ceilings this high. The gallery wall stretches all the way from the top of the sofa back to just below the ceiling for a huge impact. The pieces aren't strictly gridded but again there is a method to how their positions relate to one another. And the fact that they are all similar works with a simple color palette and matching frames keeps this gallery wall feeling a little more buttoned-up than the previous two. The concept here is really similar to what I did for my <a href="http://aliveandkickingdesign.blogspot.com/2013/01/apartment-challenge-audubon-print.html">entry wall</a>. Image via <a href="http://www.elledecor.com/">Elle Decor</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">Well isn't this cute? So smart the way the designer hung the artwork to mimic the shape of the bed canopy frames. All of the works have a similar color palette and theme, and the frames all match too. I won't be working with the outlines of a canopy bed, but this photo is a good reminder that if you can take cues from some other feature of your interior when deciding how to arrange your artwork, it can make for a nice little moment in your space. Design by <a href="http://www.athid.com/">Amelia Handegan</a>.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lastly we have this lovely little baby artwork gallery by <a href="http://www.workstead.com/">Workstead</a>, a firm in Brooklyn who does <b><i>gorgeous</i></b> work. It's a little more loose than the other gallery walls I've shown here, but it all ties together because the artwork and frames are similar in appearance and size and attention has been paid to how the pieces are placed in relation to one another. Love the variation in the width of the frames. Who can resist a tiny little artwork in a big chunky frame?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ok, so you've seen my inspirations! Stay tuned to find out how my own gallery wall turns out!</div>

<a href="http://www.sunset.com/garden/flowers-plants/house-plants-00418000080880/">This houseplant guide</a> in <a href="http://www.sunset.com/">Sunset Magazine</a> (Feb 2013) features a great selection of gorgeous houseplants. I am a huge fan of having plants in my living environment. They are like living sculptures, and they say they help purify the air inside too. I have a fiddle-leaf fig that I am trying to get to grow into a more tree-like shape like the one above and I'd <i><b>love</b></i> to add some of these other beauties to the collection. Especially the more vertical, tree-like black aralia or ficus triangularis, as most of my plants are low and squat.<br />
<br />
If you live in my neck of the woods, a great source for houseplants (and herbs and other seasonal plants) is <a href="http://www.shannonflorist.com/">David Shannon Nursery and Florist</a>. They've got a solid selection of plants at reasonable prices, a really friendly staff, and will also re-pot your plants before you take them home for a small fee. They have a selection of basic planters, but you could also bring your own. </div>

Saw this picture in Canada's <a href="http://www.styleathome.com/">Style at Home</a> magazine. I love the textured gray upholstery on these Saarinen Executive Chairs, and these chairs used as dining chairs. Mixing them in with all of the glam and feminine touches in this room takes away some of the strange futuristic appearance they can sometimes have. </div>

I posted awhile back about the <a href="http://aliveandkickingdesign.blogspot.com/2012/04/instant-attraction-home-of-bonnie.html#">home of Bonnie Edelman</a>, and they also used these chairs in their dining room to a totally different effect. Of course with the same table (different material).</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This abandoned cement factory on the outskirts of Barcelona was rescued by architect Ricardo Bofill. He lives and works here. Where can I even start? Such a big, wide open space - high ceilings is an understatement. Can you even imagine how much those window treatments weigh? I love the shots of light and greenery coming through the tall, arched windows and the way you can see that this building had a previous life as something else. My favorite part of this space is all of the material details. Rough materials like cement, brick, board-pressed concrete coming together so beautifully. I would definitely not mind having this as a live/work space.</div>

I really love the way the dark-painted exterior of this log cabin looks nestled back in the tall trees. I am a little bit on the fence about the interior, or actually maybe just the photography style of the interior. Don't get me wrong, this is a <i>great</i> interior. I just get a weird feeling from the images. With all that rough wood and that great rug, it should feel more welcoming - warm and fuzzy. I mean it is a log cabin. But the whites just look so stark and it seems a bit colder than it should. Maybe it's just that white northern light?</div>

<br />
What are your favorite blogs? I keep accumulating more and more, so I started using <a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/">Bloglovin'</a> to keep track of them all. I can use the app or website to read all of my faves in one place. Lately my favorite has been <a href="http://hommemaker.com/">Hommemaker</a>, by Orlando Soria, an interior designer in LA. His writing is hilarious and makes me actually laugh out loud. He works with <a href="http://www.stylebyemilyhenderson.com/">Emily Henderson</a>, who writes another favorite blog of mine, filled with helpful information and written in a personal tone, as if a real, approachable person is speaking to you. I tend to prefer blogs like that, unpretentious ones where you get a real sense of the person writing it - they are always the ones I read first. Another like that is <a href="http://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/">Elements of Style</a>, by Erin Gates, a designer/stylist in Boston. A few of my favorites for eye candy are <a href="http://frenchbydesign.blogspot.com/">French By Design</a>, <a href="http://roselandgreene.blogspot.com/">Roseland Greene</a>, <a href="http://www.desiretoinspire.net/">Desire to Inspire</a>, <a href="http://myscandinavianhome.blogspot.com/">My Scandinavian Home</a>, and <a href="http://www.themarionhousebook.com/">The Marion House Book</a>. There are loads of others I follow, that's just a short list of my tops. I'm sure I am missing some great ones and would love to hear about them!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Our sofa with its current wood block legs</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">I decided to jump on this project now, since it should be an easy one to tackle. </span><span style="text-align: justify;">I am going to change out our sofa legs because I am tired of the standard wood block Ikea legs. I want something a bit more sophisticated, and am planning on a tapered, midcentury-style leg, about the same height as the existing ones, and in a darker wood tone so that they stand out less visually. Please kindly ignore the artwork hanging situation in the above photo. That is my next project.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I found <a href="http://honeybadgerhome.com/2012/07/05/ikea-sofa-hack-or-how-we-saved-1000/">this helpful and inspiring article</a> on the blog <a href="http://honeybadgerhome.com/">Honey Badger Home</a>. Love the name of the blog, and love <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r7wHMg5Yjg">the honey badger</a>. They went a step further than just replacing the legs and tufted the cushions for an even more midcentury look. I am cool with the untufted cushions though. Ours are getting pretty slouchy from over two years of use, but I like it that way. Nice and casual.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Anyway. I didn't really want to mess with Home Depot (have you been to an urban Home Depot?) and tools and metric/english conversions, so I just kept looking and looking and eventually found <a href="http://www.unclebobsworkshop.com/">Uncle Bob's Workshop</a>, who makes sofa legs that are explicitly billed as <a href="http://www.unclebobsworkshop.com/product/furniture-legs/">replacements for the Ikea Karlstad sofa</a>. You can order them in a variety of woods and finishes (or unfinished), and even with brass feet. Here are some pics from their website:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I went ahead and ordered twelve replacement walnut legs for our sofa and ottoman and cannot wait for them to arrive. Since I am picky about things, I emailed first to see how to get a matte finish (I'm thinking a glossy finish will reflect more light and draw more attention to the legs, plus I just personally prefer wood that has a more natural looking finish) and also to see if I can have them sent without the white protective pads on the bottom. I plan to add my own, slightly smaller, black felt pads so that they won't be visible. Uncle Bob emailed me back almost immediately with answers that were helpful, which was excellent.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I may try taping and dipping the feet in a gold metallic paint to get the brass feet look, or I might just leave them as is. We shall see. Check back soon for pics that show the replacement legs!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
On a separate but somewhat related note, I sometimes am looking around at beautiful furniture and wanting to splurge on a really gorgeous sofa (or custom design one), but then something like this happens and I realize that this old Ikea thang with its washable, zip-off covers is really just perfect for us:</div>

How great is that giant dining nook? Using two separate tables allows people seated in the center of the long banquette to squeeze in and out, which is smart. I just love dining areas fitted with custom banquettes. If I don;t get to design one for myself sometime soon I might have to do it for someone else. Any takers?</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This project features so many GORGEOUS rugs and textiles. And also lots of great layering and style mixing. You can see some more photos after the jump...</div>
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
Firstly, I love these navy patterned throw pillows:<br />
<br />

<br />
And check out the aged Persian rug in this bathroom. Oh my god it is so beautiful I want it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrXCiCKBw_ParyC-U0Gs5qs_8ObyrUPcY3FmkQTKG39v-abwditmV03dc6wmH4aGxovfr1_9kM3gzSJSXNwMWFN5TWRQ5orQ_1z-JDc1e6Hx4b9QOwc58eqqXoA9ciY0i1SuFkvBwQpSI/s1600/Alive+&+Kicking_Peter+Dunham_House+Beautiful+Feb+2013_Bathroom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrXCiCKBw_ParyC-U0Gs5qs_8ObyrUPcY3FmkQTKG39v-abwditmV03dc6wmH4aGxovfr1_9kM3gzSJSXNwMWFN5TWRQ5orQ_1z-JDc1e6Hx4b9QOwc58eqqXoA9ciY0i1SuFkvBwQpSI/s1600/Alive+&+Kicking_Peter+Dunham_House+Beautiful+Feb+2013_Bathroom.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next we have a bedroom with so many textiles. Fabric hanging from the four poster bed layered behind the headboard, then bedding, then the upholstered sofa and its pillows, all sitting on top of the giant area rug. While not precisely my style, it is a gorgeous and very well considered room. It feels very welcoming and soft.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
And then there's this little vignette. I love the leather armchairs, antique rug-upholstered ottoman, and white, grid-panelled walls. I love this a lot.</div>

It would be ambitious, but with careful planning and a good chunk of time I think it could be DIY'ed. You could also break the grid and go for a less conventional arrangement. Smart how it can be used to conceal vents but still allow airflow, as they've done here above the door.</div>

<br />
About a year ago, I received <a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/art-of-audubon-john-audubon/1111981346">this</a> lovely set of Audubon prints as a graduation gift from a good friend. I love birds and I love nature illustrations, so I was super happy to receive these prints. They sat around for a while, and finally I decided that it was time to do something with them!<br />
<br />
You might remember my goals for our entry wall from my <a href="http://aliveandkickingdesign.blogspot.com/2012/12/my-apartment-challenge-what-im-working.html">previous apartment challenge post</a>. We had a blank wall that needed some love. So I got to it.<br />
<br />
I started by spreading out all of the prints and deciding which ones would work the best in a cluster in that area. I initially thought I might go with some of the more colorful prints, like this one:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB5GHDdEhthbRcuxLGr9OB624xMvhpy1L5VYXJtOcychrm3666SYhXPqRkCMuSA1zk25G5bjzLKWIyaljz8KvN3ihpwd2pqclHunUfX0Wan9izLRjOA-PsPuxQ_SNYPVc_3IbyWvYbZ_Y/s1600/Roseate-spoonbill.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB5GHDdEhthbRcuxLGr9OB624xMvhpy1L5VYXJtOcychrm3666SYhXPqRkCMuSA1zk25G5bjzLKWIyaljz8KvN3ihpwd2pqclHunUfX0Wan9izLRjOA-PsPuxQ_SNYPVc_3IbyWvYbZ_Y/s400/Roseate-spoonbill.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Roseate Spoonbill, John James Audubon</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
but I just wasn't feeling it. I know I tend to get tired of colors quickly, so I wound up selecting six prints with more muted coloring and lots of blue-gray, which works really well with the color of my walls. Once I had my selections I played with taping them up on the wall to see how I wanted to lay them out:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1zzX6mKSDxPj5D-zX-nMqEcsJg0nFPyoTgZLklwgFIXmKH8FwkX247EjFNdLyrdk7x1m-TA64-H3fVBesSy-MyokV_6Biz7Fbp8GU-LLm4YCIqaU-xBdUbfWm4e7mpPUfow-bfI-st8g/s1600/Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Apartment+Challenge_Entry+Wall+Audubon+Gallery.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="429" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1zzX6mKSDxPj5D-zX-nMqEcsJg0nFPyoTgZLklwgFIXmKH8FwkX247EjFNdLyrdk7x1m-TA64-H3fVBesSy-MyokV_6Biz7Fbp8GU-LLm4YCIqaU-xBdUbfWm4e7mpPUfow-bfI-st8g/s640/Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Apartment+Challenge_Entry+Wall+Audubon+Gallery.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">L: Two of the prints I chose to display; R: Mock-up of the layout</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I kept the prints that were fully colored in at the bottom, and used the two with white sky backgrounds at the top, so it feels like it gets lighter as it goes up. The placement of the buzzer phone and light switch also helped to dictate the layout. The bottom of the gallery is about 32" off the ground to allow space for a small accent table that we use to drop keys, pocket change, gloves, hats, etc.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next I needed to decide how I was going to frame these puppies. Budget was a consideration, so I knew I would probably be working with Ikea. Since the images themselves are muted and not in <i>too</i> great a contrast with my walls, I opted for a darker frame to help set the prints apart from the walls. I chose to go with an Ikea <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/series/16456/">Ribba</a> frame in medium brown. These frames do come with mats, which is a plus, however my artwork wasn't standard photo size and I wanted to add a special detail element to the framing, so I didn't use the mats. Instead I visited <a href="http://graylinelinen.com/">Grayline Fabrics</a> in Midtown, which has a pretty wide selection of linens. Printed, solid, and varying weights. I selected a linen (Warsa Oatmeal, I think) to use in the frames behind each print. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN2T7zLZQdeOCTnR9f997E0JgZQJYNTuAZpoLjtxPRFCAxZfC7H-iVLT5hPc2TwEek9vAQx0PA9zDAaiC4AC_8h18q_VXRtN3b-LpyZ5AyKHkrZ1T0t8hUNL0v4W4B3kCF3slMporB7DQ/s1600/Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Apartment+Challenge_Entry+Wall+Audubon+Gallery_Assembly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN2T7zLZQdeOCTnR9f997E0JgZQJYNTuAZpoLjtxPRFCAxZfC7H-iVLT5hPc2TwEek9vAQx0PA9zDAaiC4AC_8h18q_VXRtN3b-LpyZ5AyKHkrZ1T0t8hUNL0v4W4B3kCF3slMporB7DQ/s640/Alive+&+Kicking+Design_Apartment+Challenge_Entry+Wall+Audubon+Gallery_Assembly.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">L: Linen for behind the prints; R: Wrapped backboard, Coco helped.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wanted to add fabric to the framing to give the whole thing a bit more luxury and oomph, but opted for linen because it still looks and feels very natural/casual and just always appeals to me. I thought about cutting mats and wrapping them with the linen, but I didn't want to get too fussy with this project. I just wrapped each backboard in the linen and plopped it back into the frame with the print. I trimmed the prints down a bit to show more of the linen and used a bit of rolled scotch tape between the print and the linen to keep the prints from sliding around. Super simple. You can see the frame clips a bit (see top picture), but I decided I was cool with that. I like when you have a peek at how things work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

If you ignore the five hour trip to the emergency room that resulted from me cutting my finger and needing stitches (it healed, I'm fine, but do watch your fingers when you're cutting with a blade and straight edge, even if you've done it a million times before), this was a pretty easy, quick project. Budget friendly too. I think the cost of the frames and linen was probably about $80-$90 bucks for six prints, which comes out to about $14 per print. And you could vary this in so many ways: spray painting/gold leafing the frames, wrapping mats in the fabric, using other types of fabric, etc.</div>

Great project, and I love the mixture of historic farmhouse and contemporary elements. Lots of really great chairs in this one. And I always love me some sisal/rattan/black metal/wood/camel leather/calm, muted palette. </div>

This is just - whoa. It's beautiful, creepy, and ridiculous all at the same time. It is the work <a href="http://www.metmuseum.org/Collections/search-the-collections/60051566#">PixCell Deer #24</a> by artist <a href="http://www.kohei-nawa.net/">Nawa Kohei</a>, on view at the <a href="http://www.metmuseum.org/">Metropolitan Museum of Art</a>. I have to go see it in person. From the Met's website:</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>This taxidermied deer has been completely transformed through the artist’s use of variably sized “PixCell” beads, a term he invented. PixCell is a portmanteau word combining the idea of a “cell” with that of a “pixel,” the smallest unit of a digital image. Whether intentionally or unintentionally on the artist’s part, PixCell-Deer#24 resonates with a type of religious painting known as a Kasuga Deer Mandala, which features a deer—the messenger animal of Shinto deities—posed similarly with its head turned to the side, and with a round sacred mirror on its back. For painters of the Rinpa school, the deer was depicted often as a companion of ancient sages and had auspicious or poetic associations.</i></blockquote>
Brings me back to this, an amazing day in Nara, Japan in 2006. Feeding deer in the park (and wrestling with them to get back our map).<br />
